Chapter Six

“This isn’t a surprise to you?” Maddox stared at Aidan across the table in the pub.

“Not a damn bit.”

Maddox’s brows scrunched together, trying to comprehend. For once, the conversation was not about Bridget’s parents, and Maddox felt grateful to have the distraction—a drama that didn’t involve his embattled fiancée.

He leaned back in his chair, stretching his legs out because it was slow at O’Toole’s and the table next to them was empty. “Why the hell didn’t you tell me before now?”

Aidan shrugged. “I didn’t feel the need.”

“Aidan, I’m your business partner. And your friend. If you’ve got some history with the woman who owns the coffee house next to our ice cream shop, it would have been nice to know. Especially since she’s my fiancée’s best friend. Her maid of honor, for God’s sake.”

“Well, I didn’t know you were going to fall in love with Bridget.” Aidan frowned. “Did she tell you or something?”

“Yeah. Bridget just found out from Leia yesterday.”

“What’d she say?”

Maddox casually tossed his shoulders upward. “Just that she knew you. Was really cryptic about it. Wouldn’t say anything more, but Bridget could tell there’s a story there.” An eyebrow rose. “So, what’s the story?”

Crossing his arms, Aidan glowered. “You’ll have to wait till the movie comes out.”

Maddox narrowed his eyes. “Did you know Leia would be next to our shop before we signed the lease?”

Aidan blew out a breath. “Maybe. I wasn’t sure. But I suspected.”

“What the hell are you, some kind of stalker?”

“No, asshole. When you told Becca and me about the different places we could rent for our shop, you mentioned that there was a coffee house on Maryland Avenue that was struggling. I knew Leia ran one thereabouts. I just figured if we moved our place near hers, it could only help her.”

“You had us risk our money just so that you could help out someone from your past?”

“Not at all. I would have voted for the vacancy on Maryland Avenue, anyway. We needed the extra space and the cheaper rent. And it worked out well. So what are you bitching about?”

He was right. It had worked out well. Maddox slouched slightly in his chair. “So, what’s the deal with you and Leia?”

“Nothing much.”

“You dated?”

Aidan sulked for a moment. “Yes. We dated. And according to the State of Maryland, that’s exactly all we did.”

What the hell was that supposed to mean? Maddox eyed his friend. As close as they were and as many missions as they’d shared with each other, he could tell when Aidan was clamming up.

“But you parted on good terms,” Maddox said, more of a statement than a question, simply because it wouldn’t make sense that Aidan had wanted to help her if they’d parted as enemies.

Aidan’s head bobbled loosely from side to side. “Good terms isn’t really the way I’d define it.”

“How would you define it?”

“She’ll either punch me or kiss me when I see her at the wedding rehearsal. The punch is more likely.” Sheepishly, Aidan shrugged. “I’m kind of hoping for a kiss.
